Supported Decision Making

Supported Decision-Making (SDM) is a way people with disabilities can make their own decisions, by using friends, family members, professionals, and other people they trust to help understand the issues and choices faced. SDM is now recognized as the key to assisting people to achieve self-determination in their lives. Applying these principles in action requires a working knowledge of the law and understanding how people make decisions. In this interactive session, we will discuss what SDM means in practical, everyday terms; why SDM is important in the lives of people with disabilities; and how SDM can used to promote self-determination. Thelma Green, a self-advocate, leader, and voice for change, will share what SDM means to her and how she uses it in making her own decisions. Morgan Whitlatch, Legal Director of Quality Trust and Lead Project Director of the National Resource Center for Supported Decision-Making, will share further updates on ways in which SDM is being advanced throughout the country.
